For 23 percent of children ages 2 to 11, it’s untreated tooth decay. Dental caries, commonly known as tooth decay, is the most prevalent chronic disease among children and adults despite being largely preventable. The startling reality is that nearly half of all children ages 2 to 5 years old have never visited a dentist and 59 percent of adolescents ages 12 to 19 have dental decay in their permanent teeth, while 12 percent of all adults ages 20 to 64 have neglected to see a dentist within the past five years. Add to these figures the 18 percent of seniors 65 years and older who have tooth decay that is untreated and we can see just how far reaching the scope of this disease truly is.

Poor access to dental care is a nationwide issue estimated to affect nearly 85 million Americans, and despite slowly increasing within the last few years employer covered dental insurance is an unmet necessity for many, as 48 percent of employers do not offer dental insurance options to their employees. While factors such as income, race and education level play heavily into the equation, lack of employer covered dental insurance continues to be a key contributor in decreased access to dental care. Spirit Dental’s mission is to provide dental coverage at industry leading prices, offering exclusive insurance plan options not available through any other company.
